Date added: 16 Jan 2012 Why leather dog collars are the best choice

Many dog owners today own collars for their pets that simply do not fit very well. This may be because they are unaware of the amount of choice available when it comes to this pet accessory. If you are considering purchasing a new collar, one of the best choices in many cases are leather dog collars. This is because these types of collars are very hard wearing and most importantly, very comfortable for the dog to wear.

Leather collars come in a huge range of widths and lengths. When purchasing a collar, remember to look at the width as much as the length, as a collar that is too wide for a particular breed could cause injury to the animal, by cutting into their neck as they move their head. The collar should not restrict the dog's movements too much.

Quite a few pet owners choose dog collars that are not suited to younger dogs who are just growing out of the puppy stage. People often try to buy an adult collar that will last for years, thinking that their pet will more than likely 'grow into' the collar. This can result in the young dog getting tangled and choked when walking on a lead.

For younger dogs, sometimes a nylon collar is best, as the size of their neck will increase quickly and the owner will inevitably have to repurchase a new collar after only a few months. A leather collar will indeed last for years, so it is generally advisable to wait until the dog is fully grown to purchase one, particularly if the owner is on a budget when it comes to their pet accessories.

Many people with unruly dogs believe that choke collars are a better choice, however these types of collars are usually not a good choice for everyday use. Choke collars are best suited to use during training sessions with the dog, as they can be very uncomfortable for the animal when worn all of the time. Remember that choke collars are generally made from a metallic material, which can sometime cause discolouration in the coat of the dog. Leather collars will not cause any problems such as this and will ensure that the dog is comfortable when being kept on a leash.

Once the dog has been properly trained, they will most likely not need to wear a collar during the course of the day, except for when they are taken for a walk.
