Dog toys today come in a huge range of colours, materials, sizes and shapes, so much so that choosing one for your pet can seem like a challenge, to say the least. From interactive toys, to kongs, to rope toys, to plush, fetch, stuffed and chew toys, the choices seem to be endless. The thing to remember is that certain dogs like certain toys; the kind of toy that will keep a dog entertained for hours on end will vary dramatically from breed to breed.
The toy you choose should have some basic qualities. Firstly, it should be the right size; that is, it should be large enough so that the dog will not accidentally swallow it, or choke on it. It should be made from a safe, non toxic material, as dogs love to chew on toys. In terms of hygiene, it should be easy to clean. Remember too, that dog toys are expensive, so try to choose one that is very durable and can withstand quite a bit of wear and tear.
Interactive toys are always a good choice, as they give the owner the opportunity to spend more quality time with their beloved pet. Fetch is a classic game which many enjoy. For dogs (and owners) who love to go to the park and play fetch, a toy that can be tossed over a long distance easily is a good choice. Tennis balls are a good option. For those who cannot throw very far, there are also throwing handles that are designed to toss the ball far away. These are also a more hygienic choice for throwing a ball which has been in the dogs mouth. Sticks, whilst popular with many when playing fetch with their dog, are not the best option, as they can easily splinter and cause a cut in the dog's mouth, or even their oesophagus if swallowed. Not all dogs enjoy fetch however, so it is important to pay attention to what kind of toys they seem to love the most.
Even after you have chosen the perfect toy for your pet, which is safe, the right size and something that they enjoy playing with, it is important to supervise them whilst they are around it. You should also check toys, particularly stuffed animals, on a regular basis, to ensure that no small parts, such as the toy's eyes or buttons have come off. These can be hazardous if swallowed.
