Date added: 11 Feb 2012 Dog training; off the leash

Off leash dog training is something that most pet owners decide to work at after they have trained their dog to behave well whilst on the leash. Although some parks do require dogs to remain on the leash at all times, a lot of owners want their dogs to be able to run and play in dog parks and other suitable outdoor spots.

Remember to make sure that your dog has exercised before you practise any off-leash work with them, as this will ensure that they are calmer and more focused during the training session. It is usually best to train in an enclosed area with no distractions, such as a back garden. Begin by taking them off the leash and asking them to obey simple commands such as sit, stay and come. As each training session progresses, you can increase the distance between you and the dog. Consistency is essential, so make sure not to take them out to an open space without a lead until they are extremely obedient.

A good way to improve a dog's behaviour off the leash is to teach them how to play fetch. This will encourage them to return to the owner after running away to catch the stick. By providing the dog with a treat when they return, they will begin to create a positive association with coming back to the owner when called. This game will also ensure that the dog doesn't become bored or distracted when being trained off the leash, as almost every dog loves a game of fetch. Much like any other kind of dog training, repetition is essential; after about four or five sessions, the dog should be on the path to being well behaved off the leash.

Although it is best to start off with no distractions, after the first couple of sessions, some form of disruption should be incorporated into the training. After all, in a public park, the dog will be around other animals as well as children and adults, so they need to learn to obey the owner, even when they are being distracted by other things. This could be another family member or even another pet. By ensuring that the dog obeys the owner, even when something else sparks their interest, the trips to the park off the leash will be far more safe and enjoyable for everyone involved.
