For dogs, playing is an important part of their development as they grow up; dog toys also provide mental stimulation, a form of exercise and can be a great way to bond with your pet. Making sure that the dog has the right kind of toys is important both for their safety and enjoyment. Dog toys need to be the right size and shape, as well as in good condition.
Toys that are very small could easily be swallowed by the dog and so could pose a choking hazard. If the dog manages to fully swallow such a toy, it could also lead to stomach problems. Likewise, items such as elastic bands, ribbons and string may interest your dog, but they are definitely not suitable as toys. Remember that any toys that have sections which can easily be chewed off, such as plastic eyes on a doll or stuffed animal, must not be given to the pet. As a general rule, it is best to throw out any toy that begins to show signs of wear or disintegration.
One classic example of a suitable toy for dogs is a tennis ball. The texture is suitable for heavy chewing, the bouncing will entertain them and it can be used for playing a game of fetch as well.
Another idea is to put a treat inside a toy that is hollow. Toys that are made from thick rubber are an excellent choice because they can be rolled, chewed or thrown without becoming damaged too quickly. Placing a treat inside the toy will keep the dog engaged with it for longer, as they have to chew and play with the toy to remove the treat.
Another option for dogs that love toys are those that have squeaking pieces in them; these can be a great source of entertainment for dogs. Whilst most dogs are happy to simply chew on the item and hear the squeaking noise, some might try to get the squeaker out of the toy, so it is important to keep an eye on them when they play with it; if the toy falls apart, it will need to be replaced.
Soft toys are a good option for dogs who do not chew aggressively. Try to get a soft toy that is machine washable, as this will last longer and be more hygienic.
