Many pet owners today are opting for a dog harness for their puppies, rather than the standard collar. Dog harnesses have plenty of benefits and can make walking an energetic or as yet untrained dog far easier, particularly when there are other dogs around the area in which you are walking.
There are so many varieties of harnesses available now, that selecting one the first time around can be slightly confusing. Factors such as sizing, colours and material are all important issues, as ideally, a dog owner will be looking for a harness that is comfortable for the animal to wear, but also durable, stylish and easy to use. Here are a few tips to help you get started in finding the perfect harness for your pet.
Firstly, it is vital to consider the needs of the dog. For instance, does the dog often try to pull away from the lead when they are being walked? If this is the case, then the dog may benefit from the use of a soft mesh type of harness, or even a padded harness; these types will not rub against the fur and skin and so won't cause irritation.
If the dog has sensitive skin, or you are planning to take very long walks on a regular basis, then a harness made from a very soft material is usually the best choice. Leather is a good choice, as it softens up very quickly, yet is durable and will last for several years. For those that take their dogs swimming quite a bit, or for anyone who lives in a wet climate, then the harness that you buy will need to be water resistant. It should also be machine washable, as wet mud can cause damage to the material of a harness over time.
The durability of the dog harness is also very important, as some of the cheaper options available tend to fray and tear very easily, which will end up costing the dog owner more in the end. A harness made from a good quality material can last for many years, as long as it is taken care of correctly. Sizing is, of course, one of the most important aspects; the harness should fit comfortably, without being too tight or too loose. Measure your dog around the torso as well as the neck to find the right measurements for a harness fitting.
